映画「SPAWN THE MOVIE(1997)」のコミカライズ作品。
Based on Mark Dippe and Alan McElroy’s movie script.

A-6 agent Al Simmons is betrayed by his boss Jason Wynn and his bodyguard, Jessica Priest. The murdered Simmons awakens five years later as Spawn, discovering his wife is now married to his best friend Terry. Hell’s agent, Violator, plays both sides, manipulating Spawn into pursuing Wynn while convincing Wynn to implant a pacemaker that connects his heart to the release of “Heat-16” bombs. Unbeknownst to Wynn, the release of Heat-16 will exterminate life on Earth and begin Armageddon. All sides convene at Terry’s home, where Spawn joins with Cogliostro and turns on Violator. After briefly chasing Violator back to Hell, Spawn returns to Earth. Wynn is arrested after Terry releases info on his activities to the press.

①元々がコミックスが原作で、それを実写映画化した「映画SPAWN」。それをまたコミカライズするというのは本末転倒w このコミカライズを読んでいなくても「映画SPAWN」は理解できると思うし、原作を知らなくても楽しめると思うが、逆に内容が浅くなっていると思います。政府の隠密部隊の人間が死亡した際に、魔王の画策に遭い、望まぬ姿での転生をする。このこと自体が荒唐無稽。コミックスだから、コミックスを読む人だから受け入れる世界観。
なお、コミックスは通常は水曜日が発売日であるが、このコミックスは1997年12月1日の月曜日の発売。これは「映画SPAWN」の全米公開日に合わせたもの。

②「KING SPAWN」:Jul 24, 2024 追記
以前から噂になっていたSPAWNの映画化第二弾。タイトルが「SPAWN:2」になるなどとの話もあったが、ここで正式な脚本が完成したという報道と共に正式タイトルが「KING SPAWN」に決定したとのニュースがあがった。さてこの映画の需要がどれほどあるかと思うが、タイトルが「KING SPAWN」というのも一般の人にとってはなかなか敷居が高い。サブタイトルのコミックスから名づけたことを知る人は多くないだろうし、そもそも知ろうとも思わないだろう。当然、私はSPAWNのファンであることには間違いないが、本当の面白さが伝えきれないままにメディア展開されるのは望んでいない。あの頃のようなフィギュア・ブームの再燃は起きないとは思うが。
